E-mail

How do I avoid spam? How do I know the spam-filters are working correctly?

With Keyway's new and improved spam filters you can now download the email that you want without having to wait for or sift through unwanted advertisements.

If you feel that you might have missed a message, simply visit our Web-Mail system, and visit the Probably-Spam folder for messages that are most likely unwanted advertisements, or the TRASH folder for messages that are even more likely to be unwanted advertisements.

All messages that our filters determine are spam filters will have the subject modified to say *****SPAM***** in the subject line before the original subject. Outlook Express, or Netscape users can utilize software options to auto-move these marked spam e-mails to an alternative file for later review.

If our spam filters mark a message incorrectly, we want to know! Please e-mail us if you find a message that you feel was incorrectly marked to so we can adjust the spam filters to better suit your needs.

TIP:  To help reduce the amount of spam you receive, you might choose to not post your email address on your website, or anywhere public. Spammers collect email addresses from web sites, newsgroups, and other public places, and often sell them to other spammers.  It is advisable to use a contact form on your site, rather than a mailto: link.  Spammers can also harvest WHOIS information from domain registrations, so consider private registration through your Domain Registrar.

Why are my incoming e-mails being returned to sender?

When retrieving your e-mail from our server, it is recommended that you do not leave it stored there. I cannot send e-mail from my own server. Why?

If you operate your own e-mail server we request that you first obtain permission to utilize Port 25 by completing this brief form. E-mail being sent to Port 25 will be rejected unless your IP address has been approved for outgoing communication.

Keyway restricts the use of port 25 which is usually used for outbound e-mail. Port 25 is commonly utilized by spammers and viruses, and by restricting general use of this port our clients receive far less viral and unsolicited e-mail. Note this security modification only affects outbound traffic being sent to destination port 25 and does not affect inbound traffic on any ports.

Where did these pop-ups come from and how can I block them?

Most popups are caused by one of two sources. Either the website you are viewing has placed popups on their site or caused by small downloaded programs. As a way to generate income some "freeware" and "shareware" companies have begun including "adware" and popup programs in with their software. These programs monitor your Internet activity and display popup ads based on the sites you view. There are many programs designed to help clean your computer of these unwanted programs. Here is a list of the ones we've found to be useful:
BPSoft Popup Stopper
BPSoft Adware and Spamware Remover

How Do I "Powercycle"? / Troubleshooting DSL

Powercycling is simply defined as turning off power to a device then turning it back on. The following steps can be taken in attempt to restore a lost DSL connection:

1) Powercycling Your DSL Modem:

Why is this important? Sometimes the DSL modem will lose sync or the CO will make a change on the card which requires the modem to re-sync itself. The modem normally will do this on its own, however often a manual restart is necessary.

Westel Wirespeed modems have a power switch on the back. Turn this off then on again.

Fujitsu DSL modems have no power switch. Pulling the round black power cable from the back of the modem is necessary.

2) Powercycling Your Router (if present):

Why must I restart my router? In theory the router should try and
establish a connection once the Internet is back up, in practice however this is often not the case. Most routers have a power switch, if not pulling the power cord will suffice.

Additionally, if the router is the culprit restarting will often resolve the issue. If you are often constantly restarting the router there may be a problem with it. Try first upgrading the firmware. If this does not solve the issue contact your hardware vendor.

3) Powercycling Your Computer:

To complete local troubleshooting restart your computer.

If powercycling each of these elements do not restore your DSL connection, their may be a problem with your line. Call Keyway's support department at 909.933.3699 so that we may troubleshoot your line.

Adware: Software that displays messages in the form of banners or pop-up advertising. Also see Spyware.

Anti-Virus Software: Defends against and removes computer viruses. Anti-virus software must be frequently updated in order to be effective, for only known viral threats can be recognized as they attempt to infect your computer. Keyway Internet Services recommends F-Prot for home and office protection.

Dynamic IP Address: An IP Address which changes each time a computer connects to the internet. A dynamic address assists in security for outside sources won't be able to communicate with the moving location of the device.

Firewall: Prevents unauthorized access to or from an outside source such as the Internet or a network. All messages entering or leaving a computer will pass through the firewall, and is examined for content that does not meet the specified security criteria. A firewall is recommended for all users, particularly if a static IP address is used. Keyway Internet Services recommends Zone Lab's ZoneAlarm (free) or Tiny Firewall (trial).

IP Address: Every computer that communicates over the Internet is assigned an IP address that uniquely identifies the device. An IP address consists of 4 octets of numbers from 0-255, such as 168.232.219.199. An IP address consists of two parts, one identifying the network and one identifying the node, or host. The Class of the address determines which part belongs to the network address and which part belongs to the node address. All nodes on a given network share the same network prefix but must have a unique host number. See also Static IP Address and Dynamic IP Address.

Pop-Up Ads: Advertising which appears in an additional Internet browser window. Pop-up advertising which is delivered by the Internet site which you are viewing is known as Adware, and is usually harmless. Pop-up advertising which appears on your computer when you are not browsing the Internet is known as Spyware, and is considered malicious in nature.
